There are some great, little known, free online resources that I have been emailing out to people so I figured I would just stick it in my blog to make it more accessible. The Center for Motivation and Change (no affiliation), put together a short book and online course for helping parents and/or spouses of people with addictions and substance use problems. This approach pulls from a number of scientifically supported methods including Community reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Collectively, these methods create a treatment that trains parents and spouses to influence and support their loved one's to decrease their addictive behavior. The main components of this approach are teaching parents and spouses how to 1) make a life of sobriety more rewarding for the person struggling than a life of using and
2) improve communication. Most importantly, this protocol can be effective EVEN IF THE LOVED ONE DOESN'T AGREE TO ANY THERAPY. Please use and share links below
